Beckham County, OK – A juvenile was taken into custody early Monday morning after a Beckham County sheriff’s deputy located a vehicle that had been reported stolen or taken without permission.

Beckham County Sheriff Derek Manning said a deputy stopped the vehicle and found a juvenile behind the wheel. Manning said it was unclear from the initial log whether the deputy made the traffic stop because of the stolen vehicle report or had stopped the vehicle independently around the same time the call was received.

“There was a report of a stolen vehicle,” Manning said. “Someone called in and said that a juvenile had taken their vehicle, kind of an unauthorized use situation.”

After confirming the vehicle was the one authorities were looking for, the deputy took the juvenile into custody and began the required process involving the Office of Juvenile Affairs and a judge.

Because juveniles cannot be held in the Beckham County Jail, Manning said the juvenile was kept secure at the sheriff’s administration office while officials determined where the juvenile would be placed.

The deputy later transported the juvenile to the Cleveland County Juvenile Detention Facility in Norman.

Manning said the case will proceed through the juvenile justice system and any potential charges will be handled through that process.

During a search of the vehicle, deputies also located several vaping devices. Manning said the Elk City Police Department contacted the sheriff’s office and indicated the devices could be connected to a separate case.

The sheriff’s office secured the items for Elk City police.

The incident occurred late Sunday night into early Monday morning, Manning said.
