Sayre, OK – Northfork Electric Cooperative members will gather Saturday, August 15, for the cooperative’s 87th Annual Meeting at Sayre City Park, with organizers offering several options to help members beat the August heat.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. Members are asked to bring the registration card arriving in the mail this week along with a photo ID. Members must be registered by 10 a.m. to be eligible for the grand prize drawing and must be present to win.

Northfork Electric Cooperative General Manager Brent Meador said the cooperative will again use the drive-through registration system first introduced during the COVID pandemic.

“We’re going to do the drive-through registration,” Meador said. “You can stay in your car. Our people will be out there with their iPads registering you, and then you can find somewhere to park and come up and get in the shade in the pavilion and wait for the 10 a.m. business meeting.”

Members who would rather remain in their air-conditioned vehicles can do so throughout the meeting. NFEC will provide a local FM frequency at registration that will allow members parked around Sayre City Park to listen to the business meeting from their vehicles.

“You can hear everything going through the microphone. You can listen to the whole business meeting,” Meador said. “When it comes time to serve lunch, we’ll have runners bring you lunch out to your vehicle. You don’t even have to get in the heat.”

The meeting’s August date is a longstanding NFEC tradition. Meador said the cooperative’s bylaws, dating back to its early years in the 1930s, specify that the annual meeting be held on the second Saturday in August.

While the heat can be a challenge, Meador said the summer date also allows NFEC to make the meeting a family event.

“The City of Sayre is really good to us, and they leave the swimming pool open. That’s a big hit for our kids,” Meador said. “The miniature golf is open and free, and that’s a big hit. It makes it more of a family event.”

Free swimming and miniature golf will be available during the meeting. Sons of the Sage will return to provide live western swing music, and a Vendor Fair coordinated by the Dust Bowl Days Festival Planning Committee will also be held in conjunction with the event.

Following the 10 a.m. business meeting and prize drawings, Blue Mountain Smoke will provide the barbecue lunch. Members of the Red Knights will assist with serving.

“The Red Knights are going to help us serve it, so we’ll be efficient in getting it served,” Meador said. “They do us a great job, and their money goes to a great cause.”

This year’s grand prize is a John Deere Z545R 54-inch zero-turn mower. A runner-up will receive $1,000 cash. Everyone who registers will also receive a paring knife and an NFEC cap.

Meador said the cooperative plans to keep the business portion of the morning moving so members can enjoy the rest of the event.

“We’re going to get our business done, we’re going to give away some prizes, and we’re going to serve lunch,” Meador said. “It’s always a fun time.”

NFEC encourages members to bring their registration cards, arrive before the 10 a.m. registration deadline and take advantage of the food, entertainment and family activities at Sayre City Park.
