Clinton Regional Hospital secures state approval for Rural Emergency transition

The Penny News 982

Clinton, OK – Clinton Regional Hospital has cleared a major hurdle in its effort to convert to a Rural Emergency Hospital, a move hospital leaders say is aimed at securing the facility’s long-term future.

On Friday, CRH was notified by the Oklahoma State Department of Health that it has been granted Rural Emergency Hospital (REH) licensing, effective from Nov. 13, 2025, through July 31, 2026. The license may be renewed after that date.

The state approval follows earlier action at the federal level, where Clinton Regional Hospital had already been approved for the REH designation. That federal status allows qualifying rural facilities to receive monthly financial assistance in exchange for operating as an emergency and outpatient hospital rather than a traditional full-service inpatient facility.

City and hospital officials have worked in recent years to reopen and stabilize Clinton’s hospital after its 2022 closure, pursuing new funding sources, ownership changes and a revised operating model to keep emergency care available locally. The REH designation is seen as a central piece of that plan.

Hospital representatives said more details about the transition to Rural Emergency Hospital status, including any service changes and timelines, will be released at a later date.
