Teen arrested after purse snatching leads to high-speed chase in Clinton

Clinton, OK — An 18-year-old Minnesota man was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 14, after a reported purse snatching in Weatherford and a high-speed chase that cut through west Clinton before ending at Oliver Avenue and Gary Boulevard, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Dispatchers alerted agencies at about 11:15 a.m. to a theft at the Weatherford Walmart. The suspect vehicle was described as a black SUV with a male driver in a white shirt and a female passenger heading north on Washington.

A black 2008 Nissan Armada bearing a Texas plate was later spotted near a Love’s along I-40. The tag did not belong to the Nissan, investigators said. When a traffic stop was attempted in Clinton around 11:37 a.m., the driver braked, then accelerated west on Gary, passing vehicles on the right and running red lights at 10th and at Modelle. The SUV reached about 75 mph, the affidavit states, and sped past a mother and child standing on the sidewalk at 8th and Gary.

The chase continued through a Dollar General lot, along the railroad tracks, and across a grass field near Corbin Lane before the SUV entered the Atwoods parking lot. A tactical vehicle intervention ended the pursuit as the SUV turned east on Oliver. A felony stop followed. The driver, identified as Atticus S. Shoultz, 18, was taken into custody without incident. A female passenger was also detained.

Inside the SUV, officers reported finding a white purse, a brown wallet, and a BancFirst debit card bearing the name of the Weatherford victim. Several $20 bills were recovered from the center console. The items were turned over to Weatherford police for return to the victim.

After records checks, Shoultz was listed as a missing adult out of Minnesota. He was booked into the Custer County Jail.

Proposed charges include eluding in a manner that endangers others, unauthorized license plate, and knowingly concealing or receiving stolen property.

All allegations are accusations until proven in court.
