SWOSU Press Release

Weatherford, OK – Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) contributed more than $360.9 million in total economic output to the State of Oklahoma in fiscal year 2024, according to a new study by the University of Cincinnati Economic Center. The analysis, presented to the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education (OSRHE), highlights the essential role SWOSU plays in strengthening the economy, creating jobs, and providing value to taxpayers across Oklahoma.

The study found that SWOSU’s operations, along with student and alumni spending, supported more than 3,500 jobs statewide and contributed nearly $183 million in wages to Oklahoma workers. These impacts stretch across a wide range of industries, with ripple effects felt in areas like healthcare, education, aerospace, business, and public service. Graduates of SWOSU continue to be part of that impact, with thousands of alumni working in critical roles throughout Oklahoma and helping drive the state’s future.

The economic benefit does not stop with jobs and wages. For every $1 SWOSU received in state appropriations in fiscal year 2024, the university generated $16.02 in total economic output for Oklahoma’s economy. This return on investment demonstrates the power of higher education not just in classrooms but in communities across the state. In addition to its broad economic contributions, SWOSU’s operations, students, and alumni generated $12.25 million in tax benefits for local and state governments last year. That includes $6.86 million in income tax revenue and $5.39 million in sales tax revenue, helping fund vital services in Oklahoma communities.

SWOSU has a long history of preparing graduates who strengthen their communities, build businesses, and support families across Oklahoma,” SWOSU President Dr. Diana Lovell said. “This study confirms what Oklahomans already know—investing in higher education pays off. Our students and alumni drive innovation, improve quality of life, and contribute directly to local economies across the state.”

SWOSU’s graduates are making a difference in industries that power Oklahoma forward. From healthcare workers improving care in rural hospitals to educators preparing students for success, SWOSU alumni are leading the way. The university’s partnerships with institutions throughout Oklahoma and around the world also strengthen the state’s workforce, providing critical support in industries such as healthcare, education, aerospace, and energy.

The university remains committed to providing accessible, high-quality education that creates lasting benefits for Oklahoma. As the state looks toward the future, SWOSU continues to deliver on its promise to help build a stronger economy, a stronger workforce, and stronger communities for generations to come.
