One Dead, Two Injured in Early Morning Rollover Crash on I-40 Near Shamrock

Wheeler County, TX — A single-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning on Interstate 40 claimed one life and left two others injured, according to the Texas Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:39 A.M. on May 1, 2025, about 2.7 miles east of Shamrock. A 2020 Ford Explorer was traveling westbound when it left the roadway, entered the center median, and struck a concrete emergency turnaround barrier. The impact caused the vehicle to go airborne. Upon landing, it entered a side skid and rolled.

The driver, 57-year-old Chesley Isom of Lafe, Arkansas, was wearing a seatbelt and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital.

One passenger, Verda Isom, 56, also of Lafe, was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Another passenger, Betty Godfrey, 36, of Lafe, was belted and also transported to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The posted speed limit in the area was 75 mph. Weather at the time was reported as clear to cloudy, and road conditions were dry.

Texas Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
