Burns Flat Man Arrested on Felony Firearm Charges in Elk City

Elk City, OK — A Burns Flat man, Jerry Lee Wright, has been arrested after allegedly attempting to purchase a firearm despite being a convicted felon, according to documents filed in Beckham County District Court.

Wright, 44, was arrested on April 10, 2025, at 5:57 p.m., following an investigation into a failed firearm purchase attempt at an Elk City pawn shop. Authorities say Wright tried to retrieve a Remington 20-gauge shotgun from pawn on April 2, but a firearm background check flagged him as prohibited from owning or possessing firearms due to a prior felony conviction.

The investigation revealed Wright had previously pawned the firearm on March 31, 2025. He reportedly claimed the gun belonged to his nephew and admitted trying to retrieve it on his behalf. However, court records show Wright was convicted of felony charges in 2024, making the possession or attempted purchase of a firearm illegal under Oklahoma law.

Wright faces two charges: possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction and providing false information during a firearm transaction. A felony warrant was issued with bond set at $3,500.
