Weatherford, OK – Students from the Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences showcased their research at Oklahoma Research Day, held this year at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah. This annual event provides an excellent opportunity for students and faculty to share their research with peers from across the state.

Students mentored by SWOSU faculty members Drs. Jimena Aracena, Renan Bosque, Rickey Cothran, Marcella Santos, and Muatasem Ubeidat presented their research on a range of topics, representing the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences.

Bryant Franco presented his research on the use of AI to digitize museum specimens, while Jonathan Almanza presented his research on the evolution of acoustic aposematic signaling in vertebrates. Madilyn Crisp, McKaegan Gregory, and Rachel Uhlig shared their research on rehydrating specimens in the SWOSU Natural History Museum, with Uhlig also presenting a second poster on Amphipod biology. Angelia Buford presented her study on the development of Dictyostelium discoideum, and Star Sims highlighted her work on fruit fly behavior.

Oklahoma Research Day provides students with valuable experience in presenting their research. It helps students refine their ability to explain complex concepts, engage in discussions with experts in their field, and receive feedback that can strengthen their work. It also opens opportunities for collaboration and careers in scientific research.

The SWOSU group had the opportunity to connect with peers, exchange ideas, and learn about ongoing research across various disciplines.
