Roger Mills County, OK — Local firefighters responded Monday to three separate grass fires in Roger Mills County, with authorities saying evidence suggests the fires may have been intentionally set.

According to Roger Mills County Sheriff Darren Atha, local fire departments responded quickly and were able to knock down the dangerous grass fires before they spread further.

Sheriff’s Office personnel also responded to the scenes and searched the surrounding areas. During the investigation, officials observed evidence that suggests the fires may have been set intentionally.

The fires were reported in three locations across the county:

Near Coyote Hills Road and Highway 47

East of Skipout Lake

South of the Crawford turnoff and Highway 33

Authorities are asking for the public’s help. Anyone who may have seen suspicious activity or individuals in the areas around the fires is encouraged to contact the Roger Mills County Sheriff’s Office at 580-303-6048.

In a separate statement, the Reydon Volunteer Fire Department thanked several agencies that assisted in containing the Black Kettle 65 Fire, including Crawford Volunteer Fire Department, Strong City Volunteer Fire Department, Cheyenne Volunteer Fire Department, Sweetwater Volunteer Fire Department, Berlin Volunteer Fire Department, Oklahoma Forestry Services, Roger Mills County Emergency Management, the Roger Mills County Sheriff’s Office, and Black Kettle firefighters.

Officials said the quick response and coordination among departments helped bring the fires under control. The investigation into the cause of the fires remains ongoing.
