Sayre Issues Boil Water Advisory After Christmas Day Water Main Break

The Penny News 1054

Sayre, OK — Sayre city officials have issued a precautionary boil water advisory after a 12-inch transmission main broke on Christmas Day, cutting service for parts of the community and raising concerns about water safety.

The City of Sayre Public Works reported the break in the water system caused by the 12-inch main failure. Residents served by that line were told the drinking water may be unsafe for human consumption. As a result, consumers are advised to bring tap water to a full, rolling boil for at least one minute before drinking or using it for cooking, food prep, baby formula, dish washing, brushing teeth, ice making, and wound care. Bottled water or another acceptable water source may be substituted.

City Manager Ted Lawson said the location of the break has made repairs slow, due to large concrete and loose material crews must excavate. Heavy equipment is on site working around the clock, with full repairs expected to be completed by Friday. Officials did not immediately say how many residents are affected, but bottled water is being distributed to those who need it.

The advisory will remain in effect until further notice. The city notes potable water is available at the Sayre Fire Station for residents during the outage. For more information, residents can contact the city office or Ted Lawson at 928-2260.
